Betty Artes
The best way to describe Betty Artes is “Betty of All Trades”. As a bilingual middle school teacher in Brooklyn, New York she learned how to handle almost any circumstance or situation! Moving to Boulder, Colorado in 1984 brought out the adventurous and entrepreneurial spirit she inherited from her parents, who in 1962 in the midst of the “Cuban Missile Crisis” and Bay of Pigs, picked up and moved the family from Buenos Aires, Argentina to New York City. In Boulder, Betty raised two sons while she was a Realtor, with then Moore and Company, now Wright Kingdom Realtors. If that was not challenging enough during the late eighties and early nineties, she collaborated with now longtime business partner Ernesto Alvarez and opened Casa Alvarez Restaurant in 1994. After winning accolades from the public and critics and named “A Boulder Institution” Casa Alvarez closed in 2014 to reappear in 2016 in pouches of Award Winning Pork and Vegan Green Chile on Freezer Shelves of local grocery stores. As Co-Founder and Chile Ambassador for Casa Alvarez Foods she along with her now grown two sons, David and Evan, and of course Ernesto Alvarez have grown the company from the deli section at Boulder’s Lucky’s Market to over 60 stores in the Front Range including Whole Foods, Safeway, and Natural Grocers. Betty splits her time between Boulder, Colorado and Taos New Mexico where she co-founded Casa Taos Retreat and Training Center, a safe place for social and environmental activists to recharge, grow, learn and just Be. She is also a consultant with the Boulder SBDC and gives workshops on the ins and outs of starting and owning a restaurant. In her spare time food, the agriculture, origins, traditions, preparation presentation is her passion. You can reach her at betty@casaalvarezfoods.com

Sam Hunziker
