Job Title: Director, Category Management & Strategy

Job Location: Boulder, Colorado or remote

Reporting to the Chief Sales Officer, the Director, Category Management & Strategy has responsibility for defining and deploying category management strategies and execution across all Categories and all Channels. They are also responsible for developing tools for the ONE Sales, Marketing, and Innovation organizations. The Director, Category Management Strategy engages senior-level customer leaders across our key strategic customers, delivering category recommendations supported by compelling category insights and primary research results and building retailer partnership relationships. Responsibilities include identification and contract negotiation for all syndicated data sources and shopper primary research, along with oversight ownership of those 3rd party relationships. Additional responsibility includes managing the Advantage broker relationship for category management initiatives and analytic support.

Specific responsibilities include the following:

Leads the creation of Category growth strategies and initiatives, evaluates and secures the (people and financial) resource requirements, and develops the tactical plan and subsequent communication of those plans to the organization and broker partners

Leads Category Strategy efforts as a part of the annual sales planning process (e.g annual Category Review, Distribution and Shelving principles, field planning materials, scorecards and metrics development, etc.)

Develops and/or strengthens relationships across retailer hierarchy to drive enhanced partnership and influence, attending mid-to-mid customer meetings, and providing support for top-to-top meetings

Supports the Strategic Planning process by providing long range insights on Category trends, Innovation platforms, and shifts in the Marketplace dynamics

When appropriate, works in concert with Sales Directors on customer/channel specific strategies and opportunities, and leads storytelling and analytical support of customer presentations utilizing category, consumer, and shopper card data in order to optimize D/S/M/P and drive Sales growth

Develops and oversees enterprise-wide syndicated data reporting and analysis, as well as providing monthly and quarterly business updates to the ONE Leadership team

Engages with our Advantage CI team to bring thought leadership, best practice sharing, and tactical and analytical resources to aide in execution

Assists in developing consumer analytic skills of others on the team (e.g. newer Analysts, Customer Business Managers, etc.)

Job Complexity

Develops productive working relationship with many cross functional groups at HQ, Field Sales teams, and the Customer

Job Specifications

• Minimum education required: Bachelor’s Degree
• Years of relevant experience: 7-10+ years as Category Manager, ideally partner role with retailer. CPG, Food, Broker Experience preferred.

Knowledge, skill, and abilities required:

IRI and/or A.C.N syndicated data
Panel data, Demographic data, Frequent Shopper Card data
Space Management, Apollo and or JDA
Project Management skills
Communication Skills
Travel 25-30%


BA required, MBA a plus
12+ years of increasingly significant sales and management experience within the food/beverage industry, understanding of and specific relationships in grocery and organic and natural foods would be considered a huge plus.
Customer Facing Sales and/or Category Management experience required
Experience in managing people with wide ranging skill levels and responsibly
Proven ability to establish and maintain strategic and working relationships with customers
Keen understanding of consumer products and exhibit the creative skills necessary to craft stories and selling facts around brands.
Hands-on, entrepreneurial and customer oriented, coupled with the ability to assume increasing levels of responsibility
