NATURALLY BOULDER ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF ITS ANNUAL FALL AWARDS & PITCH SLAM

Hass Hassan is honored with Naturally Boulder’s Lifetime Achievement Award
Bamboobies Wins the Pitch Slam

BOULDER, COLO. – SEPT. 15, 2010 – Naturally Boulder, a local organization whose mission is to nurture start-up natural foods companies and promote Boulder as the epicenter of the natural products movement, honored the best and brightest in the local natural products industry at its Fall Awards Celebration last night at the Boulder Theater. A sold-out crowd of nearly 300 people enjoyed an evening of networking, dining, celebration and business pitching.

For the seventh year running, Naturally Boulder hosted its popular Entrepreneurial Pitch Slam on Wednesday afternoon at Rembrandt Yard in Boulder. Twenty-six entrepreneurs had three minutes to pitch their business start-ups in front of a panel of natural products industry leaders. The judges on the panel were Jane Miller of Rudi’s Organic Bakery, Phillip Anson of EVOL who also won Naturally Boulder’s first-ever Pitch Slam in 2004, Peter Burns of Celestial Seasonings, Mike Ferry of Horizon Organic and Debbie Carosella, a brand & product innovation consultant. The four finalists: Maddy D’Amato of Love Grown Foods, Kerry Gilmartin of Bamboobies, Ryan Weilert of Hope Hummus and Sanjay Rajan of Slow Color repeated their pitches last night in front of the Boulder Theater audience. After deliberating, the judges awarded the $26,000 prize package to Kerry Gilmartin, founder of Bamboobies. Bamboobies is a Boulder-based company that makes sustainable nursing pads from bamboo for breastfeeding mothers.

“The Pitch Slam competition was incredible this year,” said EVOL’s Phillip Anson, Pitch Slam judge. “So many of the companies were deserving of the prize, it was difficult to make a decision. We selected Bamboobies because it is a unique, sustainably made product that fills a distinct void in the marketplace. Their brand is compelling and the business model is scalable.”

The Naturally Boulder annual Awards presentation followed the Pitch Slam finals. Members of the community entered their nominees for the best and brightest natural foods companies and leaders of 2011 in four categories:  Best Young Business (in business fewer than five years), Company of the Year (in business five or more years), Local Hero (a leader in government, academics or not-for-profit who fosters the values shared by the natural and organics community) and Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Best Young Business award was presented to New Planet Beer. EVOL was honored with the Company of the Year award, and Chef Ann Cooper of Boulder Valley School District received the Local Hero award. The final award for Lifetime Achievement in the Boulder Natural Products industry was presented to Hass Hassan, co-founder of the original Alfalfa’s in Boulder, Fresh & Wild stores in the U.K., founding partner of Greenmont Capital Partners, and Chairman of the Board, Madhava Natural Sweeteners.

“I’ve been involved in this industry for 40 years and have received various awards for my businesses and accomplishments, but the Naturally Boulder Lifetime Achievement Award means the most to me,” said Hass Hassan. “First, it is from Boulder, which is a community I love and a community I am proud to call home. Second, it is a true honor to be recognized by my peers. These are people I admire and deeply respect, and they are the true pioneers in the natural products industry. I am touched, honored and flattered by this award.”
